What an auto locksmith does

Car keys are a trade of their own

A car lockout isn't the same job as a front door. Modern car keys carry electronics that have to be matched to the vehicle, so an auto locksmith brings different equipment — and we'll always be straight with you about what your car needs.

The quickest call is the classic one: keys locked inside the car, often with the engine running or a child or shopping inside. That's usually a swift, non-destructive opening. Lost car keys and a broken or snapped key are bigger jobs, because for most cars built in the last two decades a replacement isn't just cut — it has to be programmed to talk to your car. And a key fob that's stopped working is sometimes just a dead coin battery, sometimes a fault that needs re-syncing to the car.

Tell us the make, model and year and we'll tell you honestly what's involved, roughly how long it'll take, and the likely cost before anyone travels. For the newest or highest-security models, some keys can only be supplied through a main dealer — if that's your situation, we'll say so rather than waste your time. If you've been searching for a "car locksmith near me" in English — in Paris, Lyon, Nice or anywhere in between — and getting nowhere, this is the number to call.

Car key services

What we get called out for

Keys locked in the car

Doors shut with the keys (or a baby, or the shopping) still inside? Usually opened quickly without damage — the most common and fastest car call we get.

Lost car keys

No spare and no key at all? We can make and program a new one on site for most vehicles, and disable a lost key where the car allows it.

Broken & snapped keys

Key snapped in the door or ignition, or worn until it won't turn? We extract the broken part and cut and program a fresh key.

Car key replacement

A new key cut and coded to your vehicle — including remote-control fobs. We'll confirm whether yours can be done roadside or needs a dealer first.

Transponder & chip keys

Most modern keys hold a chip the car must recognise. We program transponder and proximity keys so the engine will start, not just the door open.

Key fob & remote faults

A remote that's gone dead is often just its battery; sometimes it needs re-syncing to the car. We sort both, and replace fobs that are beyond repair.

Good to understand

Why a new car key takes longer than a door key

If you've only ever had a house key cut, the wait for a car key can be a surprise — here's why, so there are no shocks.

Since the late 1990s, nearly every car sold in Europe has an immobiliser: a chip in the key exchanges a code with the car, and the engine only starts if they match. Cutting a blade that turns in the lock is the easy part; the key also has to be programmed to your specific vehicle, sometimes by reading data from the car's onboard computer. That's why a replacement can take longer than a simple lockout, and why the make, model and year matter so much — they tell us the key type, the programming method, and whether it can be done at the roadside or needs the dealer. Sending those details (and a photo of your old key, if you have one) on WhatsApp first makes the whole visit faster and the quote more accurate.

For visitors

Hire-car key trouble on holiday

Rental cars are one of the most stressful ways to lose or lock in a key — far from home, on a schedule, with a return deadline ticking. It's also one of the situations we handle most for English-speaking visitors.

If you've just collected a hire car at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly and locked the keys inside it in the airport car park — or done the same at a motorway aire, a beach car park near Nice, or outside your gîte — we can usually open it quickly and get you moving again. Lost rental keys are trickier — replacements often have to come through the rental company or a dealer for that exact vehicle — but we'll open the car, tell you honestly what your options are, and save you translating it all over a French helpline. One important step: always tell your rental company too, because your agreement sets out who pays for a lost-key replacement, and they'll need to know. Call us in English, share the registration and model, and we'll take the pressure off.

Stuck with your car keys?

Tell us the make and model in English and we'll send a mobile auto locksmith to wherever the car is — a quick photo of your key speeds everything up.

Car locksmith FAQ

Questions about car keys & lockouts

It varies a lot by vehicle. A basic non-chip key is inexpensive; a transponder or remote key that has to be programmed costs more, and proximity ("keyless") fobs more again. The make, model and year decide it — send those on WhatsApp and we'll give you a realistic figure before anyone comes out, with the price confirmed before work starts.
In the large majority of cases, yes. A car lockout is normally opened non-destructively, without harming the door or glass. If your keys are locked in with the engine running or a child inside, say so when you call and we'll treat it as urgent.
A straightforward lockout is minutes. A new programmed key depends on the car — often under an hour once the locksmith is with you, longer for some models or if a key has to be ordered in. We'll give you an honest time estimate up front based on your make and model.
Call us and we'll usually open it quickly so you can carry on. If the keys are lost rather than locked in, also contact your rental company, as your agreement covers who pays for a replacement and they may need to arrange the specific key. We'll open the car and explain your options in plain English either way.
For most cars on the road we can cut and program the key right there at the vehicle. The newest models and certain high-security brands sometimes require a main-dealer key — if that's the case for yours, we'll tell you honestly rather than have you wait for nothing.
Yes — the English-speaking line is open 24/7 for car lockouts and emergencies, including nights, weekends and holidays. Some programmed-key jobs are best done in daylight when keys can be sourced, and we'll advise you. For urgent help see our emergency locksmith page.
